Tough worm
I discovered this guy happily eating away at my Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa). All parts of this plant are toxic, so I guess this probably makes this guy toxic to birds ? It kind of looks like a Tomato Hornworm.

I hate those things! When I find them, I feed them to my bird.
ReplyDeleteI searched the internet and discovered its probably the caterpillar of either a sphinx or hawk moth.
ReplyDeleteI once saw a hummingbird hawk moth hovering to suck nectar from my pentas, it was awesome.
It does look like a tomato horn worm! Great shot!
ReplyDeleteIf you go out by your pentas or most white flowers (white lantanas work great)right after the sun has just come down, you will surely see hummer moths...it is incredible to watch. I put some white pentas right outside my kitchen window so that I can watch them while I prep dinner...neat stuff.
ReplyDeleteHey, I think you are right, it was mostly at the white pentas, but it also visited the pink ones. I first thought it must be the tiniest hummingbird I've ever seen, but then I saw it was either a moth or butterfly. I called my daughter to watch and we were both fascinated. That was the only time I ever saw one.
